TEXTILE AT THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ART FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE PRESENT DAY (1898-2020) – 60 YEARS SINCE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT IN ITS MODERN FORM
From March 31 to April 21 Dobrich Art Gallery will host the exhibition “TEXTILE IN THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ARTS FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE PRESENT DAY (1898 – 2020) – TEACHERS AND STUDENTS. This exposition is part of a series of celebrations on the occasion of the anniversaries of “Textile – Art and Design” Department at the National Academy of Arts and brings together works from the two main exhibitions of the anniversaries. It aims to present the historical development of the specialty, as well as its contribution for enrichment of artistic life in the country. The need to demonstrate the educational and creative processes and achievements in the field of contemporary art practices of the specialty to the general public is determined by the objective to promote the experience, demand, opportunities and achievements of contemporary textile art.
The exhibition includes woven works with different stories and stylistic characteristics, which continue the good traditions of the Bulgarian textile school. Although they retain some of the traditions, they are innovative insofar as they can be formally defined as drawing, painting and sculpture created with textile materials and techniques. Included are artworks typical for the path that textile practices have walked through to be determined as textile art, as well as contemporary conceptual works. Further to overcoming the decorativeness, entering the territory of fine art is made through three-dimensional solutions.
The role of the material is decisive. Finding a material not only as means of depiction but to influence and suggest by itself, to correspond to the artistic idea, is a trend that retains its significance to this day.
The exhibition at the Art Gallery – Dobrich presents to Dobrich audience the works of professors from the Department and experimental students’ developments distinguished by their innovation and individuality. The leading concepts of the teachers in “Textile – Art and Design” and their international significance lead to recognition of specialty as one of the important factors in the development of textiles as art and the textile design in Bulgaria.
The aim of the exhibition is to provoke the interest to the development of the specialty and the infinite opportunities and freedom it provides to the young talents.
