EXHIBITION OF IVAN KIRKOV

In two halls of the Dobrich gallery is to be opened an exhibition of Ivan Kirkov /1932 – 2010/ on March 21st 2018. It will represent drawings and gouashes collected and prese4rved by by Boriss Statelov, an owner of the first private gallery, opened in 1988 in Varna.

Most of the works in the collection are dated thus giving the opportunity to get acquainted both with his early drawings /from 40s/ and the works from the later periods. The exhibition is completed with artist’s thoughts about painting, creation etc. his poems, an information about Gallery 8.

Ïn the different artistic genres the critics call Ivan Kirkov a “painting phenomenon”, “legendary name in Bulgarian art”, “talented radical artist”.

The painter was born on January 1st 1932 in Assenovgrad. In 1955 he graduated the Art Academy in Sofia in painting under prof. Kiril Tsonev and prof. Iliya Petrov.

In the following years he illustrated book by Elin Pelin,Tsanko Tserkovski,Kamen Kalchev,Ran Bosilek, Imre Malach, Ivan Turgenev;he also illustrated numerous periodicals. He worked as a scenographer in the cinema, the Satire Theatre, theYouth Theatre and Opera.

His first solo exhibition was opened by the writer Yordan Radichkov in 1969.

Ivan Kirkov organized solo exhibitions in : Sofia – 1969, 1978, 1987, 1996, 2004- a retrospective exhibition in the National Art Gallery; 2016 – in the New Bulgarian University; 2015 – in gallery “Credo Bonum”; in Dobrich – 1984 and after 1989 – exhibitions in Plovdiv and Burgas; in Assenovgrad – a jubilee exhibition in 2002. Over the years his friend and connoisseur Boriss Statelov opened numerous exhibitions of Ivan Kirkov in Gallery 8 in Varna and in Sofia.

Since 1985 he was a professor in the National Art Academy.

In the last years of his life he lived and worked in Assenovgrad.

Yonov/ and the “Yordan Yovkov” theatre curtains /1980/; mosaic panel in “The Theatre” sweet shop; mosaic wall panel in the Memorial Museum “Buzludzha” /1981/; in Assenovgrad – mosaic wall panels in the city library and the Communist Party House /1982/ and wall paintings in “September” cinema.

Ivan Kirkov was awarded numerous prizes for painting, illustration, placard and decorative-monumental works.
