Stoyan Tsanev graphic exhibition

On 12 September 2019 in Dobrich Art Gallery was opened an exhibition in memoriam of Stoyan Tsanev. The exposition displays 65artist’s graphic works from the collections of the Graphic Art Gallery – Varna and the city galleries in Dobrich, Varna and Silistra, showing the development of his specific style along the years. Among the special guests of the event were Varna municipality representatives, prof. Rouzha Marinska – art specialist, art critic and historian, as well as Stoimen Stoilov – Bulgarian graphic and painter, close friend of the artist.

Influenced by the Polish graphic stream, Stoyan Tsanev becomes a phenomenon in Bulgarian artistic life after his return from Warsaw in 1973. The purity of his expression reduced to minimalism is highly valued by Japanese connoisseurs and he presents his artworks in eight personal exhibitions in the country. Frugal in the means, he is very careful in details and gradually transits from figures to signs and symbols, which “the person will inevitable understand if has my sensitivity”.

Stoyan Tsanev is highly appreciated both amongst art connoisseurs and critics, and his fellow artists. He establishes aesthetics and graphic art criteria used by artist from few generations as a touchstone and highest standard.

Mrs. Plamena Racheva, director of Varna Art Gallery, cited one of Stoyan Tsanev’s researchers: “He is an artist who appeared on Bulgarian art scene in the 70s unexpected but definitely necessary.” According to her Stoyan Tsanev “was not only talented artists but he also had a character expressed with dignity, humbleness and confidence.”

“Our means are different, our mean is the silence. There must be silence in the paintings”, says Stoyan Tsanev. But his works are not silent, they carry messages.

The exhibition can be seen until 10 October in Halls 1 and 2 of Dobrich Art Gallery.
