LIFE WITHIN ART / “Sculpture” – an exhibition of Nikola Bogdanov in Dobrich Art Gallery

On Dec 1st /Thursday/ 2016 at 6 pm in Hall 2 of Dobrich Art Gallery an exhibition dedicated to the sculptor Nikola Bogdanov /1932 – 2013/ was opened.

He is one of the most vivid personalities of Dobrich and Dobrudzha – a sculptor, public figure and honorable citizen of Dobrich. The painter is one of the founders on the Union of the Artists of the town and its longstanding Creative Secretary. N. Bogdanov was bound with the life of the Gallery in Dobrich from the very start of its functioning and actively collected works for the enrichment of its fund. He was also one of the initiators of the general art exhibition “The Land and People”. For several decades in the period 1964 – 1987 this kind of exhibitions has been organized in Dobrich thus attracting artists from across the country.

Nikola Bogdanov was born on July 12th in Targoviste. He graduated Secondary school in Dobrich and continued his higher education in the Academy of Fine Arts – Sofia. The painter graduated in “Decorative – monumental sculpture” under prof. Lyubomir Dalchev in 1962.

In 1967 he became a member of the “Sculpture” department of the Union of Bulgarian Artists in Sofia.

Between 1963 and 1981 he has worked as a painter – designer of the Puppet Theatre in Dobrich. There Nikola Bogdanov created projects of over 70 puppet stage plays. He also took part in the creation of the project and the opening of the Puppet Theatre building in the town. In 1982 on the occasion of the first Assembly “Banner of Piece” he bestowed on the theatre the wall murals in the lounge of the building. Nikola Bogdanov has also been a stage designer in the towns of Yambol, Pazardzhik, Gabrovo, Russe, Nitra/Slovakia/ and others. In 1982 he arranged a solo exhibition of sculptures in Dobrich.

The sculptor took part in over 50 National exhibitions and in 1967 at the General Art exhibition – Sofia – he was awarded the Second prize for sculpture. In 1973 in Dobrich he won the prize for sculpture of “Dobrudzhanska Kultura” newspaper at the “The Land and People” General Art exhibition. In 1983 he was also given the Second prize for sculpture in “Man and the Work” General Art exhibition in Gabrovo. Works of his are arranged in the National Gallery, Sofia City Gallery, the galleries in Russe, Silistra, Razgrad, Balchik, Kavarna, Shabla etc.

Many of his monumental works, memorials, reliefs, frescos, mosaics, ceramic wall compositions and sculpture compositions add to the atmosphere of Dobrich, Kavarna, the villages of Krushari and Kaynardzha. They also form the exteriors and interiors of public buildings and schools in Dobrudzha. He is the author of the monuments of Despot Dobrotitsa in Kavarna /1977/ and the perished Bulgarian soldiers /1944-1945/  in Krushari /1988/, the relief of His Majesty Boris III in Dobrich /1992/, the bust of Vassil Levski in Dobrich /1998/ etc.

In the middle of 70s and the beginning of 80s of the last century after a motion of the Union of the Bulgarian Artists and the Dobrich Municipality he was awarded the medal of “ Cyril and Methodius” – III, II and I degree for his creative and public activity in culture.

In the autumn of 2002 he was awarded the title “Freeman” of the town of Dobrich. In the summer of 2006 the sculptor accomplished the monument of Admiral F. Ushakov on cape Kaliakra. Because of that the Russian Federation awarded the him with the medal on the name of “Lomonosov”.

In the spring of 2007 in Dobrich was unveiled the monument of “ Cyril and Methodius” – a monumental work which Nikola Bogdanov endowed with his fellow citizens.

In the town of Dobrich were organized exhibitions dedicated to his 75th and 80th Anniversaries.

In the present exhibition works from the sculptor’s atelier are included. Among them the visitors can enjoy two early works which haven’t been exposed yet and photos of the monuments in Dobrich and the region. The exposition also contains photos from the record of the family and autobiographic texts.
